Black Friday By the Numbers: Sales, Crowds and More!


Black Friday fact sheet:

  • Estimated 138 million people went shopping (up from 134 million last year)
  • Estimated 74 million people shopped online (up from 61 million last year)
  • Americans spent $10.7 billion this year on Black Friday alone (up 0.3% over last year)
  • On a regional basis, sales rose 1.7% in the Northeast, followed by a 0.4% increase in the Midwest and in the West. Sales declined -0.3% in the South.
  • By 4 a.m., nearly one-fourth (24%) of Black Friday shoppers were already at the stores.
  • Average shopper this weekend spent $365.34 (up from $343.31 last year)
  • Macy’s CEO estimated 7,000 people waited in line at their Manhattan flagship store until store opened at 4am (up from 5,000 last year)
In terms of this entire Thanksgiving/Black Friday holiday weekend, Americans spent an estimated $45 billion dollars… WOW!
