Dollar Stores: What to Buy and What Not to Buy

We know y’all love to save money but is everything you buy at the Dollar Store worth your buck? The answer is simple: No. You have the idea that if it’s only a dollar it must be worth it, but there are many things you need to consider and may easily get for cheaper at Walmart or Target when using coupons.

What to buy at Dollar Stores:

  • Greeting Cards – I buy greeting cards from the dollar store quite often! 😀
  • Paper products (Towels, plates etc.)
  • Cleaning Products – These items are often just as good as some of the name brand products.

What not to buy at Dollar Stores:

  • Food – You need to always look at expiration dates as some items may be already expired.
  • Make Up – These items are often dry or packaging may be distorted/partially open, so watch out when buying items for your personal use.
  • Extension Cords

Fun Fact: There are more dollar stores than drug stores in the US now.

We’d love to hear from you! Do you shop at dollar stores? If so, what do you buy or stay away from?

(thanks @kcal9)

I have noticed that items such as Luvs diapers are more expensive at my local Dollar General than at Walmart or even Krogers! I don’t even shop at Dollar General unless they are having a clearance sale or something like that. But I do love my Dollar Tree! : )

See.. I love buying food at my local $.99 only- I got a gallon of Miracle Whip (that was not outdated) that I was able to split with my mom. I regularly pick up organic items (like Cascadian farms) and other brand name things. I think it is just good to check expiration dates… but if it’s just close and you know you can use it by then you are golden!!

Dollar General Store prices are usually a little higher than Walmart. The prices are rounded up to the next $.50. They have sales and smaller packages for better couponing deals. Usually every other Saturday you can use a $5 off $25 coupon. If you’re there during the week the coupon prints on your receipt or go online to print it. They had the best deal I could find on Planters Peanut Butter $2 so I could use my $1.50 off coupons. I’m in Southern Indiana.
