Yesterday (6/22/10), Google announced that Google Voice, which was previously allocated via invitation only, is now open to the public.
What is Google Voice?
Web-based platform for managing your communications. We introduced one number to ring all your phones, voicemail that works like email, free calls and text messages to the U.S. and Canada, low-priced international calls and more.
I’d suggest signing up now before all the easy-to-remember phone numbers are taken.

if i understand this correctly…you can give out the google voice number and not have to reveal you other numbers? sounds like a great way to fend off those annoying telemarketing calls.
I've had my Google number for about 8 months now. It is so cool! free long distance. All calls from my google number look like incoming calls to my cell phone, so free incoming minutes on all outgoing google calls. When I want to make sure I don't miss a call, I give them my google number and it rings my home and cell at once. You can listen in as someone is leaving a message and decide whether to pick up or not, just like back in the day of regular answering machines! And it's all FREE!!
what about outgoing calls? which number is going to show up? If its your "real" number doesnt it defeat the purpose of the google number?
